Koh Rok Day Trip From Koh Lanta: How to Book It, What It Costs and When to Go
We spent a few days on Koh Lanta during our year-long honeymoon, and our verdict on camera still stands: the top thing to do in Koh Lanta is to leave Koh Lanta and go to Koh Rok. It is a pair of uninhabited islands in a national park in the Andaman Sea, with turquoise water, a reef in good shape and a speedboat that drops you right on the sand. Here is how to plan the day trip, updated for 2026.
why go
Why Koh Rok
Why we loved it. Of everything we did around Koh Lanta, this was the day to remember. The water is turquoise, the coral was in good shape, and there was no garbage anywhere: nobody lives on the islands, and the park takes care of them.
What it is not. Quiet. Koh Rok is a popular day trip, so expect other boats and plenty of snorkelers on the beach. The park also closes for several months each rainy season to protect the coral.
what to do
Things to do in Koh Rok
SnorkelSnorkel the reef
The main event, in some of the clearest water we have snorkeled. The tour lends you a mask, and the coral was in really good shape when we went.
BeachAn hour on the sand
The speedboat drops you right on the beach, so you are steps from the sand. Bring a towel and reef-safe sunscreen.
TipThe toothpaste trick
The thing that made the biggest difference on our trip: rub a little toothpaste on the lens of the borrowed mask, rinse it, then add anti-fog spray. No more fogged-up snorkeling.
Koh LantaWalk a shelter dog
Back on Koh Lanta, Lanta Animal Welfare was the top-rated thing to do on the island when we went. You can take a shelter dog for a walk on the beach for the afternoon.
Koh LantaMai Kaew Cave, with a guide
A real crawl-through-the-dark cave with ladders and tight squeezes. It was 300 baht each, more than we usually spent, and worth it. Do not go in without a guide.
getting there
How to get to Koh Rok
- Get to Koh LantaVans run from Krabi airport, and ferries connect Koh Lanta with Krabi and Ao Nang. We took the ferry from Koh Lanta to Ao Nang when we left.
- Compare a few tour agenciesWe checked four agencies in town and they were all about the same, around 1,300 baht a person in high season in 2017. Today the online listings run about $50 to $60 a person, usually with Koh Haa added.
- Hotel pickup and the speedboatTours pick you up at your hotel in the morning and run the speedboat out to the islands, with lunch and snorkel gear included.
- Pay the national park feeThe park entry fee is usually not included in the tour price. Bring cash and check the current rate with your operator.

6 Koh Rok mistakes to avoid
- Going in the rainy season. The park closes for the monsoon, roughly mid-May to mid-October, and the dates change from year to year. Check before you plan around it.
- Booking with the first agency you see.Compare two or three. The prices were close when we checked four, but you can sometimes save a couple hundred baht.
- Snorkeling with a foggy mask.Toothpaste on the lens, rinse, then anti-fog spray. It made the biggest difference to our day.
- Forgetting cash for the park fee.It is usually separate from the tour price.
- Touching the coral or leaving trash. The reef is in good shape because the park protects it. Take everything back with you, and use reef-safe sunscreen.
- Skipping the guide at Mai Kaew Cave.It is genuinely intense inside. You would not want to be in there without one.
