Isla Holbox, Mexico: The Car-Free Island With Our Favorite Beach in Mexico

Grain of sand for grain of sand, we would put Holbox up against any beach from our year in Mexico. It is a car-free island off the northern tip of the Yucatán, where the water stays knee-deep 50 feet out, the sand is wide and quiet, and nobody is selling you bracelets. Why Isla Holbox

Why we love it. The beach is wide and clean, without that feeling that every stretch belongs to a restaurant, the way it did in Tulum. The water is shallow so far out that you wade to the sandbar with a drink in hand, and when we went there was no seaweed and none of the vendors you get in Cancún. Our verdict on camera: the best beach in Mexico.

What it is not. Holbox is not polished. Cell signal is weak, Wi-Fi is spotty, the power goes out, the streets are sand, and the town center is loud with golf carts. That is the trade for an island this quiet; plan to unplug.

Things to do in Isla Holbox

BeachWade out to the sandbar

The beach slowly turns into a sandbar that seems endless, and the water stays below your waist. Watch where you step: horseshoe crabs live in the shallows.

SunsetSunset at Punta Cocos

The west end of the island is the sunset spot. Rent bikes (about $5 for two hours when we went) and ride out, but leave early: we missed sunset two days in a row.

NightBioluminescence, no tour needed

Stay at Punta Cocos after sunset. About an hour after dark, the waves "turn on" with glowing plankton. Skip the paid tours if you just want to splash in it; bike or take a golf-cart taxi out and back.

WildlifeSwim with whale sharks

Tours run roughly mid-May to mid-September, best in July and August. The boat ride from Holbox is long. If Isla Mujeres is also on your trip, the ride to the whale sharks is shorter from there.

WildlifeFlamingos and the island tours

The lagoon between Holbox and the mainland is a nature reserve with flamingos and pelicans. Boat tours to the nearby islands are the easy way to see them.

How to get to Isla Holbox

1. Fly into CancúnHolbox has no commercial airport. Cancún (CUN) is the gateway.
2. Drive or ride to Chiquilá, about 2 to 2.5 hoursWe drove and parked right at the ferry terminal. Shuttles and private transfers run from the airport, and ADO buses run from downtown Cancún. If you land late, sleep in Cancún and go in the morning.
3. Take the ferry, about 25 minutesTwo companies, Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos, run the crossing roughly every half hour from early morning to evening, for about $12 to $16 a person each way. Cold fronts can cancel sailings, so leave slack before your flight home.
4. Golf-cart taxi to your hotelNo cars are allowed on the island. Golf-cart taxis wait at the dock.

6 Holbox mistakes to avoid

1. Arriving without pesos.There is an ATM, but lines get long and plenty of places take cash only.
2. Counting on Wi-Fi.Signal is weak, Wi-Fi is spotty and the power goes out. Offline maps and a downloaded playlist help.
3. Forgetting bug spray.The mosquitoes at dusk are Michigan-summer level. Bring repellent for sunset and the bioluminescence.
4. Going over spring break.Early spring brings the party crowds. November to March outside spring break is the sweet spot.
5. Not checking the seaweed.Holbox sits on the Gulf side and gets far less seaweed than Tulum or Playa del Carmen, but ask your hotel in summer.
6. Cutting the ferry back too close.Weather can stop the boats. Do not book your ferry back the same afternoon as a tight flight.

Is Isla Holbox worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a quiet beach. It is our favorite beach in Mexico: wide, clean, shallow and without vendors. If you need nightlife, strong Wi-Fi or resort polish, stay in Cancún or Playa del Carmen.

How do you get to Holbox from Cancún?

Drive, shuttle or bus about 2 to 2.5 hours to Chiquilá, then take the 25-minute ferry (Holbox Express or 9 Hermanos). There are no cars on the island; golf-cart taxis wait at the dock.

How many days do you need in Holbox?

Two to three nights. That covers the beach, a sunset and bioluminescence night at Punta Cocos, and a whale shark or flamingo tour.

When is the best time to visit Holbox?

November to March for the cleanest beaches and fewest mosquitoes, avoiding spring break. July and August for whale sharks and the brightest bioluminescence, with more heat, crowds and seaweed risk.

Does Holbox have sargassum?

Much less than the Caribbean coast. Holbox faces the Gulf of Mexico, so it is usually spared the worst of it, but heavy years can still bring some in summer. Ask your hotel before you go.

Can you drive on Holbox?

No. Cars are not allowed. You get around on foot, by bike or by golf cart.
